Constables’ responsibilities

The office of constable is filled through election, by district, for a four-year term. Each district will have the same boundaries as the districts established for justice court judges. As a part of Wayne County’s law enforcement structure, constables play an essential role in keeping the criminal justice system moving.

A constable’s general duties are “to keep and preserve the peace within his or her county, by faithfully aiding and assisting in executing the criminal laws of the state.” In addition, the constable is required to attend the justice court of his or her district and execute all judgments in any criminal case before the court.

The Office of Constable is established through Article 6, Section 171 of the Mississippi Constitution.
