Mississippi State University Extension Service — Wayne County office
What is the Extension Service?
The Smith-Lever Act of 1914 established the Cooperative Extension System, a publicly funded, informal educational system that links the United States Department of Agriculture, the land-grant university system and individual counties.
As the off-campus educational arm of Mississippi State University, the Extension Service provides current research and educational information to individuals in all 82 counties. Mississippi State University Extension Service is also a cooperating partner with Alcorn State University, the 1890 land-grant institution in Mississippi.
The Extension Service routinely puts on community events, holds lectures and courses and answer gardening and farming questions from local residents. For young people, the Extension Service offers the 4-H program, which is America’s largest youth development organization that seeks to empower nearly 6 million youth with the skills to lead for a lifetime.
Through life-long, community learning strategies, the Extension Service works to be a proactive, responsive and collaborative learning organization, committed to the growth and development of its targeted audiences.
The program works to improve agricultural related processes, as well as to strengthen families and communities through the dissemination and application of research-generated knowledge. Leadership techniques, collaborative learning and organizational strategies are also at the core of the program’s work.
